During the awards banquet at the 2021 American Society of Concrete Contractors Conference, St. Louis, organization members were recognized for the hard work done in the 2020 year. From acknowledging the feat that is driving over a million miles with minimal safety issues to the concrete construction of an awe-inspiring job that can only be described by the gasps of those attending, as well as bringing attention to the work by an emerging leader in the industry.
These are the top winners of the Decorative Concrete Awards, the Gaining Strength Award, various safety awards, as well as the scholarships presented to the students representing the future of our concrete industry.
2 Scholarships
American Society of Concrete ContractorsThe Education, Research, and Development Foundation has awarded two scholarships to students in the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program. Corrina Dodd, Trafford, Ala. and Dixie Jane Dryden, Smyrna, Tenn. both attend Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro, Tenn. Each received $5,000.
To qualify for the scholarship, a student must be enrolled full time in the CIM program and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA. The ASCC Foundation was created in 1989 to fund education and research that advances the quality and productivity of concrete construction.
Owner/Executive Safety Award
D. Thomas Ruttura, owner, Ruttura & Sons Construction Co., Inc., of West Babylon, N.Y. received the ASCC Member Owner/Executive Safety Award. The award recognizes one owner/executive of a contractor-member company who displays a clear focus and passion for safety and provides leadership that creates a best-in-class safety culture. The Safety and Risk Management Council (SRMC) is a specialty council dedicated to making ASCC contractors the safest in the industry. The Council board consists of safety and insurance professionals from all aspects of the concrete contracting industry. Council activities include publication development, review and monitoring of ASCC events and materials for safety compliance, member education, a safety awards program, and a safety/insurance hotline.

American Society of Concrete ContractorsSpecial contractor Hemma Concrete, Marietta, Ga. and general contractor Sundt Construction, Tempe, Ariz. earned the W. Burr Bennett Awards for Safety Excellence Award. These awards are presented to contractors that place the highest priority on safety. Entries are judged on three years of safety performance indicators, values and trends; a self-assessment checklist of company safety practices; and detailed descriptions of safety plans and culture.
Additional awards presented included the Outstanding Safety Achievement Awards based on work hours done in 2020 and Outstanding Fleet Safety Records based on miles driven in 2020 with zero accidents. In addition to the Safety Excellence Award, Sundt Construction was also recognized for its lowest safety incident rate for over 650,000 work hours. Specialty contractor Wayne Brothers Companies of Davidson, N.C. was awarded an Outstanding Safety Achievement Award for its safety record after worked over 400,000 work hours. Having driven over 1.8 million miles, Buesser Concrete of Eau Clair, Wisc. safetly drove themselves into earning recognition in an outstanding fleet safety record award.

Top Leader Under 40
The Emerging Leaders Committee of the ASCC presented its fourth Gaining Strength Award to Zach VanBemden, a project manager for Kent Companies, Grand Rapids, Mich. The award was established to acknowledge up and coming individuals aged 40 and under, from member companies, who go above and beyond to promote and professionally represent the concrete industry, through their actions in their company and industry organizations.
Decorative Concrete Awards
American Society of Concrete ContractorsIn recognition of an impressive job done, the Decorative Concrete Council’s WOW! Award was earned by Ruttura & Sons Const. Co. Inc., for the work done in the Little Island @ Pier 55 in Manhattan, N.Y. Little Island is a $250 million Hudson River Park Trust project which takes the idea of piers and parks to a new level. The most visible portion is the pots, fabricated giant cups put together with pieces called petals. 39 sets of formwork were made after extensive 3D computer modeling to create the 132 pots. While the pots were modeled, cast, and assembled, marine contractors drove the pilings in stages, up to 200 ft. below the river. The project includes a total of 267-cylinder piles, each supporting approximately 250 to 350 tons.
